The term 'Technical Diving' really only came to be known in the early nineties, and whilst there are variations as to the exact meaning of the
phrase it is generally understood to mean any diving which exceeds the scope of recreational diving. Thus it tends to imply gas mixes other than compressed air, dives deeper than 40m, and/or involving planned decompression, and overhead environments such as caves and wrecks. The vast majority of today's Technical divers have graduated from the ranks of experienced recreational divers.
Technical Diving was born as clusters of keen, largely US based, recreational divers found ways to experiment with decompression procedures and equipment to allow them to perform
in more ambitious offshore wreck and Florida cave environments. The continued evolution of protocols established by these pioneering divers has given us the tools we now use to make Technical Diving as safe as it is for the curious recreational diver to move into.
Advances in diving in recent years have been rapid to say the least. Ten or fifteen years ago even Nitrox was scarce, let alone Trimix. Nowadays, especially in the Philippines, which has always been a leader of the field in the Asian region, these gases are commonplace, and allow us to dive longer, and deeper, than would have been thought possible just a few years ago.
Tech Asia is somewhat unique. A stand alone technical diving centre training IANTD divers and Instructors, we are also partnered with Asia Divers, a repeat award winning PADI instructor training and certification centre.
Thousands of divers travel each year to the Philippines to dive and to improve their training and it would not be unreasonable to ask why people would bother to travel this far when technical dive courses exist all over the world.
